Fire Safety

Fire SafetyIt is extremely easy, and even cheap, to promote fire safety in your home and your workplace. The chance for a fire always exists, but that does not mean that the chance of losing everything to a fire needs to exist. Furthermore, there are things you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, uninjured, and alive. Fire safety requires a minimum investment of time and money.

The easiest thing to do is make sure there is a fire extinguisher on every floor of your home and easily accessible. There should also be a small fire extinguisher in your kitchen. You should learn what you need to do for the various types of fires possible in the kitchen. For example, what would you do if a grease fire breaks out? You should never throw water on a grease fire. Instead, you should smother it with a pan lid or something similar to that. A fire extinguisher was also be a good idea in that situation.

Second, make sure all of your smoke detectors are fully operational and have fresh batteries. You should test them periodically. The smoke detectors are the easiest way to keep your family safe, but you might be surprised to learn about the number of people who never think to double-check the batteries.

Third, you should have a plan, and your children should be aware of the plan. What is the best and easiest way to evacuate the house? Where will the family meet once you have gotten out of the house? A clearly stated and understood meeting place will minimize the possibility of a child getting lost or a misunderstanding.
